Despite widespread acceptance that NGA is the end game of network deployment, telcos hesitate due to questions about business models, the nature of the interaction with content and application providers, and issues around service innovation and building demand. Embracing cooperative and open models is key to answering these questions.

Fiber to the premises (FTTP) is a market that is growing, but not quite as fast as expected, primarily due to the lack of a holistic view by all the players in the value chain. Such perspective is especially important to telcos, which need to see how each player's drivers can be leveraged to boost the market.

Several incumbent telecom operators have recently stated publicly that they believe content players like Google should share a portion of their revenue to make the investment in next-generation broadband sustainable. But our model shows that even a very generous revenue-sharing scenario would provide only a minimal fraction of the income needed to fund the upgrade.

The choice between GPON and EP2P and the implied topologies that underlie these technologies is really a choice between a lower-cost, high-risk implementation and a higher-cost, future-proof implementation. The choice is not about the better technology?it's about implementing the right technology in a way that's aligned with who you are as a player and what your FTTH strategy is.

Fiber to the Home: Making That Business Model Work
Vendors and service providers have struggled to find a business model that works for fiber to the home (FTTH). The current single-source, one-service provider-for-one-customer model is too constrained. Rather, companies must look beyond the historical strategy of investment versus competition, embrace interoperability and work together to employ an open-access model for FTTH.
In this webinar, Yankee Group analysts Benoît Felten and Wally Swain explore how an open-access FTTH business model works, how to optimize it and what makes it the best solution for vendors and service providers.

Dutch regulator OPTA is in the process of imposing an open access regulation on Dutch cable operators that will concern TV distribution only. While this may open some opportunities for a limited number of established players, it's unlikely to prompt a significant shift in the market. Other regulators in cable-strong countries however might be looking into variants of this regulation in the near future.

Analysis of a series of high-level ?generic? next generation access business models suggests that on the basis of the current generation of services, the revenue-generating opportunity will not offset the costs in a reasonable amount of time for the vertically integrated service provider deploying it. Opening the network to competitive or new service providers is one of the solutions to solve that conundrum.
