  1. Telecom Italia Success Depends on Data and 4G

During the past three to four years Telecom Italia (TI) has struggled to retain market leadership in the increasingly competitive Italian mobile market. Its mobile revenues continue to decline, driven by lower call termination rates and reduced prices for voice and messaging. TI's future success depends on a strong performance in mobile data, and the migration to 4G/LTE will provide it with a new platform for sustainable growth and renewed competitive differentiation.

  2. Can Vodafone Solve the Data Profit Puzzle?

As mobile data traffic continues to rise sharply, network operators must address business model challenges. 5. Tablets Give Mobile Broadband a Boost

Just when growth in mobile broadband (the cellular-modem variety) was beginning to look elusive, along come tablets to create renewed interest. During the next four years connected tablets will be the most important driver of new mobile connections in Western Europe. Despite continued economic uncertainty, the total number of MBB connections--excluding smartphones--will almost double from 32 million at the end of 2010 to 60 million by 2015.

  6. Improve Communication to Minimize Churn

Subscriber churn continues to be a major challenge for European mobile network operators (MNOs). Average churn rates have crept up during the past three to four years, driven by economic difficulties and increased operator competition. To bring churn back under control, MNOs should improve customer communications, introduce new compensation initiatives and ensure their device portfolios remain competitive.

  17. Is Prepaid Really a Customer Segment?

Prepaid versus postpaid is an outdated and increasingly irrelevant basis for segmenting mobile customers. In Europe it really tells us only one thing: whether customers pay for their mobile service before or after they consume it. This segmentation model reveals almost nothing useful about customers' preferences, attitudes, aspirations or behavior. Effective segmentation should instead be based on a combination of detailed customer profile information and behavioral data.

The prospect of a double-dip economic recession looms large in Europe. The mobile industry is not immune to its consequences, which will include high unemployment, shattered consumer confidence and reduced spending.
