During the past three to four years Telecom Italia (TI) has struggled to retain market leadership in the increasingly competitive Italian mobile market. Its mobile revenues continue to decline, driven by lower call termination rates and reduced prices for voice and messaging. TI's future success depends on a strong performance in mobile data, and the migration to 4G/LTE will provide it with a new platform for sustainable growth and renewed competitive differentiation.

Just when growth in mobile broadband (the cellular-modem variety) was beginning to look elusive, along come tablets to create renewed interest. During the next four years connected tablets will be the most important driver of new mobile connections in Western Europe. Despite continued economic uncertainty, the total number of MBB connections--excluding smartphones--will almost double from 32 million at the end of 2010 to 60 million by 2015.

Subscriber churn continues to be a major challenge for European mobile network operators (MNOs). Average churn rates have crept up during the past three to four years, driven by economic difficulties and increased operator competition. Prepaid versus postpaid is an outdated and increasingly irrelevant basis for segmenting mobile customers. In Europe it really tells us only one thing: whether customers pay for their mobile service before or after they consume it. This segmentation model reveals almost nothing useful about customers' preferences, attitudes, aspirations or behavior. Effective segmentation should instead be based on a combination of detailed customer profile information and behavioral data.

The prospect of a double-dip economic recession looms large in Europe. The mobile industry is not immune to its consequences, which will include high unemployment, shattered consumer confidence and reduced spending. Mobile players must move quickly to get ahead of the double dip. They should revamp offers and loyalty programs, innovate on value, continue cost-cutting and do everything possible to ensure their most profitable customers are still with them when the good times return.

The European mobile market is highly mature. During the next five years, ARPU will decline and service revenue will remain flat at roughly ?200 billion per year. U.K. mobile customers are migrating from prepaid to postpaid services in record numbers, driven primarily by high levels of smartphone adoption and mobile network operators' (MNOs') pricing tactics. To avoid short-term loss of market share and ensure a healthy postpaid business in the long term, MNOs should increase postpaid choice, ramp up online customer support and partner with MVNOs for prepaid.

Mobile network operators (MNOs) must introduce customized price plans to sustain mobile broadband (MBB) revenue growth and ensure long-term business model sustainability. Tiered pricing should be only the first step toward a more personalized approach. MNOs' end goal must be to ensure consumers are offered MBB services that meet their specific needs in terms of preferred devices, consumption behavior and price-sensitivity.

Consumer demand for great connected experiences can be modeled according to a five-level hierarchy of needs: (1) devices, (2) connectivity and communications, (3) tools and services, (4) content and (5) the social Web. Companies that fulfill customers? higher-order needs and retain their trust will be the long-term winners. The brand strength of Amazon and Google gives them an early advantage.
