For starters, Yankee Group observed that there is not a consistent definition of the M2M market. Therefore, as the global connectivity experts, Yankee Group—based on our nearly 40 years of communications market research and several years tracking M2M—lays the foundation with the following definition:

M2M refers to data communications between machines, which include lights, thermostats, vehicles, mobile assets, vending machines and medical devices ("machines" exclude handsets, computers/PCs or personal communications). An M2M solution includes device, software, network and service components that enable information to be created, extracted, shared or acted upon for the purpose of improving enterprise operations. Network communications are typically carried on public wireless networks (e.g., GSM, CDMA and satellite) but can include sensor, mesh and other wireless networks. M2M is at times used interchangeably with telemetry that encompasses wireline networks (e.g., fiber, POTS, Ethernet and DSL).
